People are needed who can think strategically about the human capital within an organization and balance the wants and needs of the company’s diverse workforce. As a leader within the HR department, you can play a vital role in creating an engaged, productive workforce that will impact the overall effectiveness of your organization.

Tiffin University’s BBA in Human Resource Management is a career-oriented degree for those individuals who want to make a real difference in the careers and lives of others in the workforce. You’ll develop the skills needed for the effective acquisition, training, performance appraisal, laws and regulations that determine the rights and obligations of employees and employers, job analysis, job evaluation, establishing pay structures and benefits, risk management and loss prevention, management of safety & workers’ compensation, employee assistance plans, preventative health issues, emergency response & preparedness, rewarding and fair treatment of employees – whether you plan on pursuing a career with a Fortune 500 company or a small business.

You’ll begin studying the seven major functions within the human resource field from the start of your first human resource class. Our curriculum was developed around Society of Human Resource Management guidelines for student preparation in completing the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) certification. Our industry-focused curriculum, along with the strong business core classes, will prepare you for leadership roles within the human resource field.

In each course, you’ll learn from experienced faculty who speak from experience, having served in industry leadership positions including Director of Human Resources, Regional Human Resource Manager, Director of Employee Education and Training, Compliance Manager and more. These experienced experts have managed human resources for some of the nation’s leading companies such as JP Morgan Chase, Whirlpool, Owens Corning, Lowes, Marathon Petroleum, Hercules Tire, Cardinal Health and others.

Balancing cutting-edge theory with hands-on practice, the BBA in Human Resource Management will prepare you for the world of work. After completing our program, you’ll be prepared to recruit, select and hire. You’ll have a firm understanding of performance management systems, compensation and benefits, succession planning, policy implementation, training and development and diversity and inclusion. You’ll have strong communication skills and the ability to critically think and problem solve.

You’ll gain this knowledge and these career-ready skills by studying with faculty who know of what they speak. Our passionate instructors have worked with Fortune 500 companies. They’ve worked in private equity firms and small family owned businesses. These experiences and ongoing networks allow for valuable, meaningful classroom discussion and industry interaction.

Very importantly, you’ll put the knowledge and skills you learn to practice, as every HR student must meet a requirement of 150 hours of experiential learning. This experience working with an outside firm is critical in providing our students with relevant field knowledge. The companies where our students intern are served as well, as their executives have recognized the level of career readiness our HR students exhibit.

Active learning and using metacognitive approaches within the classroom allow students to better problem solve and engage in critical thinking. Supporting the HR program with a strong management-based core curriculum allows infusion of case studies at multiple levels in both program curriculum and core courses. Presentation requirements with group projects support communication, leadership and collaboration.

You’ll graduate from Tiffin University with a degree in human resources – along with many hours of invaluable practical experience. You’ll be required to complete a professional internship during your junior and/or senior year. Under the guidance of HR faculty members, you’ll complete 150 hours with an outside selected firm. The firm will provide supervision and on-the-job training to ensure that you are learning practical experiences preparing you for long-term employment.

Bringing Knowledge to Practice
  • Case study discussions, presentations and development are heavily used within the HR curriculum.
  • Current industry professionals are brought to classrooms to discuss careers and share and engage in open dialogue around applicable professional and industry experiences.
  • Students within the HR program actively engage in mock interviews with local business leaders, reviewing concepts from both an interviewee and interviewer perspective.
  • HR is a field that is heavily engaged in representing a global-minded perspective through incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion. Capitalizing on our own campus diversity, group work within the classroom allows students to interact with widely diverse populations.

SAMPLE COURSES

Employment and Labor Law (LAW321) – This course is an overview of various laws and regulations that determine the rights and obligations of employees and employers. Topics covered include the nature of the employment relationship and common law principles, prohibitions against discrimination on the basis of certain protected characteristics such as race and gender, wage and hour law, the Family Medical Leave Act, the National Labor Relations Act and other similar areas of labor and employment law. The primary focus is on federal laws governing the employment relationship, but there will also be discussion of state and local laws.

Human Resource Management (MGT317) – A study of the human resource function in business. Major areas of study will include staffing, recruitment, training and development, wage and salary administration, job analysis and evaluation and labor relations.

Total Compensation Management (MGT318) – A study of the total compensation management function in business, as evidenced through the human resource framework. Major areas of activity will include job analysis, job evaluation, establishing pay structures and benefits.

Human Resource Risk Management (MGT320) – This course will examine the scope and role of HR in the occupational health and safety arena, the fundamental components of comprehensive programs and, more importantly, the interplay between these considerations and how important HR professionals are in their success. Topics covered include OSHA requirements, risk management and loss prevention, management of safety & workers’ compensation, employee assistance plans, preventative health issues, emergency response & preparedness and developing a culture of safety, amongst others. There will be focus on the fundamental components of a comprehensive health and safety program to protect the employees in an organization and avoid costly liability.

Managing Diversity in the Workplace (MGT351) – In the context of the growth of multinational enterprises and the increasing diversity of the American workforce, this course deals with gender, racial, age, cultural and other differences in the workplace. The course will focus on being open, sensitive, and fair in dealing with differences and on using diversity as positive force within organizations. This is a writing intensive course.
